Can you take peptides orally?
A few peptide drugs work by mouth, but most are broken down in the digestive tract. That is why most peptide therapy is given by injection.

The short answer
Most peptides cannot be taken orally, because the stomach and intestine break them down like any other protein before much reaches the bloodstream. A small number of FDA-approved peptide drugs get around this. Oral semaglutide, sold as Rybelsus for type 2 diabetes and as Wegovy tablets for weight management, is formulated with an absorption enhancer, yet the Rybelsus label estimates that only 0.4% to 1% of each dose is absorbed. That is why the tablets come with strict instructions about taking them on an empty stomach with a small amount of water. Other oral peptide drugs include desmopressin tablets and linaclotide, which acts inside the gut. For most therapeutic peptides, injection under the skin is still the standard way to deliver an effective dose.
Why the gut is so hard on peptides
Digestion exists to break proteins into amino acids, and peptides are short chains of the same building blocks. The digestive tract is built to break them apart and to keep large molecules out of the blood, so the few oral peptide drugs need special help, such as absorption enhancers or protection from gut enzymes. Linaclotide sidesteps the problem by working inside the gut, where it is minimally absorbed.
That is also why claims about oral or under-the-tongue versions of injectable research peptides deserve caution. Unless a product has been formulated and tested to survive digestion, there is little reason to expect much of it to reach the bloodstream.
Pill or injection: how the choice gets made
When both forms of a medicine exist, the right one depends on the person. A weekly injection uses a small needle once a week. Daily tablets avoid needles but need a strict morning routine on an empty stomach, and the tablet doses are far larger because so little is absorbed.
Cost, insurance coverage, side effects and how well you can keep to the routine all matter. Dr. Kamen can walk through the options that fit your situation at your evaluation, and our semaglutide page explains how that program works.

Related questions
Are there peptide pills that actually work?
Yes, a few. Oral semaglutide (Rybelsus for type 2 diabetes and Wegovy tablets for weight management) is FDA-approved, as are desmopressin tablets and linaclotide. They work because they were formulated and tested specifically for oral use. Most peptides have no effective oral form.
Why are most peptides injected?
An injection under the skin delivers the peptide into tissue, where it is absorbed into the blood without passing through digestion. That gives a predictable dose with a small needle, anywhere from daily to weekly depending on the drug’s half-life. See our half-life and administration reference.
Do oral or sublingual research peptides work?
There is usually no way to know. Research peptides sold as capsules, drops or sprays are rarely tested for how much reaches the bloodstream in people, and they are not FDA-approved. A product that has never been studied in its oral form gives you no reliable dose.
