Are peptides steroids?
No. Peptides are chains of amino acids. Steroids are ring-shaped, fat-soluble molecules such as cholesterol and testosterone. They work differently and are regulated differently.

The short answer
Peptides are not steroids. A peptide is a short chain of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up proteins. A steroid is a fat-soluble molecule built on a four-ring core, a family that includes cholesterol and the hormones the body makes from it, such as testosterone, estrogen and cortisol. The two work differently. Peptide hormones bind to receptors on the surface of cells and send signals inward, while steroid hormones pass through the cell membrane and act on receptors inside the cell. The law treats them differently too. Anabolic steroids are Schedule III controlled substances under federal law, while peptide medicines are regulated as prescription drugs. The confusion comes from overlap in purpose: some peptides influence hormone systems, and both groups appear on anti-doping lists.
Where the confusion comes from
Both groups come up in gyms and on anti-doping lists, and some peptides do affect hormones. Growth hormone secretagogues prompt the pituitary gland to release more growth hormone. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone, a peptide made in the brain, sets off the signals that lead the testes to make testosterone. Influencing a hormone system does not make a molecule a steroid, though. In that chain, the steroid is the end product, not the peptide signal.
Anti-doping rules reflect the difference. WADA lists anabolic agents, including anabolic steroids, under category S1, and peptide hormones and growth factors under S2. Both can be banned, but they sit in separate categories for separate reasons.
Testosterone therapy is steroid therapy
Testosterone is a steroid hormone, so testosterone replacement is, chemically, steroid therapy. When it is prescribed for hypogonadism confirmed by repeated morning blood tests, Endocrine Society guidance is to aim for testosterone levels in the mid-normal range and to monitor with labs. That separates medical replacement from steroid misuse. In sport, testosterone stays prohibited without a Therapeutic Use Exemption.
If low testosterone is your concern, our testosterone replacement therapy page explains how evaluation, labs and monitoring work at our clinic. Peptides marketed to raise growth hormone or testosterone are a different topic. Most are not FDA-approved for those uses, and their benefits are unproven.

Is a peptide a hormone?
Some are. Insulin, glucagon and oxytocin are peptide hormones the body makes naturally. Many other peptides have different jobs, and many therapeutic peptides are lab-made versions or modified forms of natural ones. Semaglutide, for example, is a modified form of the gut hormone GLP-1.
Is MK-677 a peptide or a steroid?
Neither. MK-677 (ibutamoren) is a small-molecule drug designed to mimic the hunger hormone ghrelin. It is not FDA-approved for any use, and WADA prohibits it at all times. Our MK-677 page covers its status.
Are peptides legal?
FDA-approved peptide medicines are legal with a valid prescription. Compounding rules vary by substance and changed recently, and federal law limits growth hormone to uses FDA has authorized. See are peptides legal in the US for the current picture.
