Is Ipamorelin FDA-Approved? Its FDA and 503A Status in 2026

No. Ipamorelin has never been FDA-approved, and it is not on any of FDA’s 503A compounding category lists.

Medically reviewed by Charles Kamen, MD, board-certified neurologist ·

The short answer

No. Ipamorelin is not an FDA-approved drug and never has been. No company has brought an ipamorelin product through FDA’s approval pathway, and there is no approved brand to compare it with.

On compounding, ipamorelin is on none of the three categories on FDA’s 503A list, which is still dated May 14, 2026. Category 1 allows compounding during review; Category 2 flags a significant safety risk; Category 3 means a nomination lacked support. Ipamorelin’s nomination was withdrawn. Being on no list is not the same as being permitted, and it is not the same as being flagged.

Off the safety-risk list is not on the permission list

In 2023, FDA was reported to have placed a group of peptides, ipamorelin among them, in interim Category 2, the category that signals a significant safety risk in compounding. In September 2024 ipamorelin was reported removed from Category 2 after its nominator withdrew the nomination. The same report covered CJC-1295, AOD-9604, thymosin alpha-1 and selank.

That removal is often retold as "the ban was lifted". It was not a move to Category 1, the category that allows compounding while FDA reviews an ingredient. Ipamorelin now sits on no category of the list at all. That is a quieter position than Category 2, and it gives no affirmative allowance.

Ipamorelin and MK-677 are on different lists

Ipamorelin and MK-677 (ibutamoren) are often compared because both are discussed as growth-hormone secretagogues. Their regulatory positions are opposite. Ibutamoren mesylate is on FDA’s current 503A Category 2, the list of substances FDA says raise significant safety risks and should not be compounded. Ipamorelin is on no list.

They are also different kinds of molecule. MK-677 is a small molecule, not a peptide, although it is often sold under the "peptide" label. Neither is FDA-approved.

The popular combination has never been tested as a combination

Ipamorelin is most often discussed alongside CJC-1295, as a single "CJC/ipa" protocol. The combination has no regulatory status of its own, and our evidence index found no rigorous human trial of the pairing. Each component has small early-phase human data showing growth-hormone release. Neither has completed clinical-outcome trials, and the pair has never been trialled together.

Where Ipamorelin stands on evidence and in sport

Evidence grade: Tier C - ~1–2 small early-phase human studies

Early human data shows GH secretion; no completed outcome trials. There are zero rigorous human trials of the popular CJC-1295 + ipamorelin combination.

How we grade peptide evidence

Anti-doping status: Prohibited at all times - S2.2.4 (ghrelin mimetic / GHS)

Named growth-hormone secretagogue under S2. Prohibited in and out of competition.

Ipamorelin and the FDA: FAQ

Is ipamorelin FDA-approved?

No. Ipamorelin has never been FDA-approved, and Drugs@FDA lists no ipamorelin product. It is also not on any of FDA’s 503A compounding category lists (dated May 14, 2026); its nomination was withdrawn.

Is ipamorelin still on FDA Category 2?

No. Ipamorelin was reported removed from Category 2 in September 2024 after its nominator withdrew the nomination. It was not moved to Category 1, and it is not on Category 1, 2 or 3 on FDA’s current list.

Can a pharmacy compound ipamorelin?

This page does not settle that. Ipamorelin is on no FDA 503A category list, so it has no Category 1 allowance and no Category 2 flag. Whether a given pharmacy may compound it depends on the current legal pathway, which your physician should confirm when care begins.

Is ipamorelin the same as MK-677?

No. MK-677 (ibutamoren) is a small molecule, not a peptide, and FDA lists ibutamoren mesylate on 503A Category 2 as a significant safety risk. Ipamorelin is a peptide and is on no FDA category list. Neither is FDA-approved.

Is ipamorelin banned in sport?

Yes. Ipamorelin is prohibited at all times under the WADA Prohibited List 2026, named as a growth-hormone secretagogue under S2. Athletes should confirm current status through Global DRO or their anti-doping organisation.
