Peptide Therapy FAQ · In your body

How long do peptides stay in your system?

Anywhere from hours to about seven weeks. It depends on the peptide’s half-life, since a drug takes four to five half-lives to clear.

The short answer

How long a peptide stays in your system depends on its half-life, the time it takes for the amount in your blood to fall by half. A drug is considered essentially cleared after four to five half-lives. Semaglutide has a half-life of about one week, and its FDA label says it remains in circulation for about five to seven weeks after the last dose. Tirzepatide’s half-life is about five to six days, which puts clearance at roughly three to four weeks. Liraglutide, at about 13 hours, clears in around three days. Short-acting peptides such as tesamorelin, with a half-life under an hour, leave the blood within hours, though leaving the blood is not the same as being undetectable. For many unapproved peptides, no one has measured a human half-life, so any number quoted online is a guess.

Why clearance time matters in real life

Long half-lives are why semaglutide and tirzepatide are taken once a week, and why their effects, side effects included, take time to fade after a missed or final dose. They also matter for planning a pregnancy. The Wegovy label advises stopping at least two months before a planned pregnancy because of semaglutide’s long half-life.

Clearance matters before surgery and sedation, too. GLP-1 medicines slow stomach emptying, and their labels warn that pulmonary aspiration has been reported during general anesthesia or deep sedation. Tell every clinician and anesthesia team that you take one, before any planned procedure.

Half-life is not the same as how long the effect lasts

Half-life describes how fast a drug leaves the blood. It does not tell you how long the drug’s effects last, which can be shorter or longer depending on how the drug works.

Before a procedure, a lab test or a planned pregnancy, ask about the specific drug rather than peptides in general. Our half-life and administration reference lists route and half-life for the peptides patients ask about most.

Will peptides show up on a drug test?

Standard workplace drug tests do not look for peptides. Sports anti-doping tests are different and do test for many prohibited peptides. Our page on peptides and drug tests covers both.
